TRONOH (Oct 27, 2011): Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said religious education teachers must have a global view and an open mind towards developing and churning out quality human capital.
He said that their focus should not only be confined to educational aspects but should also include cultural, professional and political development among others.
"(Religious education) teachers are the agents of change and transformation which will shape the future of the country and people," he said at a special meeting with religious teachers in Perak at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas, here today.
Two thousand religious teachers from the whole state attended the gathering.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, described Islamic religious teachers as a valuable national asset in moulding noble values for the current generation to achieve the aspiration desired by the government.
He said Islamic Education teachers also played a role in creating awareness among the community to uphold the religion by appreciating the faith and fulfilling their religious obligations.
Muhyiddin said the view that the government was only keen on physical development without giving emphasis on social and moral issues as well as Islamic religious education was incorrect.
"The opinion is inaccurate because in developing the ummah and the country, professional development is also important besides the development of human capital. We notice that there are Muslim countries that are still poor, backward and quarrelling," he said.
He said if the country were in such a situation, then the national resources could not be developed to bring progress to the ummah.
As such, in matters concerning development, the government balanced between physical and spiritual development and this role was being borne by the government and society.
During the question and answer session, Muhyiddin said the government was always ready to assist the Sekolah Agama Rakyat (SAR) especially in the aspect of teacher training, infrastructure and financial assistance.
"We are willing to assist so that the process of teaching and learning can be enhanced and we are also willing to accept these schools as Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK).
"We don't take over but we assist so that the teachers receive commensurate payments and improve the infrastructural facilities...and it is also hoped to improve excellence in the Islamic education system in the country," he said.
Muhyiddin said the government was also willing to consider the suggestion to provide scholarship or bear the cost of study for SAR teachers who wished to pursue studies at the Teachers Study Institute as well as the Universiti
Pendidikan Sultan Idris.
At the function, Muhyiddin also handed over aid amounting to RM15.8 million to the SAR, SABK and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama from the whole of Perak.
This morning in Ipoh, Muhyiddin officially opened the Medical Faculty, Quest International University Perak (QIUP) in Jalan Raja Permaisuri Bainun.
QIUP commenced operations in April and had offered courses in Business Studies, Science, Business Administration and Computer Science while the Medical Faculty would begin to enroll students at the end of the year. --Bernama
Thousands throng cultural celebrations at Deepavali open house
LITTLE India in Ipoh was a sea of people as thousands thronged the square in anticipation of the cultural performances and delicious food served at the state-level Deepavali open house.
Folks began pouring into the area as early as 6.30pm on Thursday to get the best seats in order to catch the song performances by local and foreign artistes, followed by cultural dances later.
Other than the colourful and vibrant performances, guests were also treated to Indian delicacies like thosai, roti canai, murtabak and murukkuas well as other local delights.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who opened the event, went around shaking hands, much to the delight of the crowd.
In his opening speech, Muhyiddin said he was impressed with the large turnout at the event.
It showed that the Indian community’s support for the Government had surged tremendously, he added, before approving a RM300,000 allocation to upgrade the multi-purpose stage in Little India.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, in his welcoming address, said Little India had become more vibrant since Muhyiddin’s visit there last year.
“So, having him back here to celebrate Deepavali with us is indeed a special occasion,” Dr Zambry said, noting that Muhyiddin had then allocated RM1.5mil to beautify Little India.
Earlier during his day-long visit to Perak, Muhyiddin and his wife Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman had breakfast with about 500 people at Quest International University Perak (QIUP) before opening its medical faculty.
Among those present were Prof Emeritus vice-chancellor Datuk Dr V.G. Kumar Das, University Council permanent member R. Magandran and Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director Tan Sri Kamal Hashim, who is also Wawasan QI Holding Sdn Bhd chairman.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, later met with religious teachers at Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Tronoh where he disbursed RM15mil to 59 religious schools in Perak.
In his speech, Muhyiddin said religious teachers should adopt a global view and open mind in order to develop better human capital.
